saturday was chili night

Which essentially means we made a chili and served with Corona, tequila and astronomically strong margueritas.

This is 12 liters of chili. Heavier to stir than you might think.

Here's my recipe (3 portions):

Chop one yellow onion and one garlic. Fry in olive oil until they are soft but not brown. Add chili spice mix (e.g. this one which works perfectly fine even if this is a vegetarian chili) and lots of olive oil to ensure that the spices absorb plenty of oil. At this stage, the whole thing will look like a brown paste. Add chickpeas, kidney beans and 2 finely chopped tomatos. Fry for a minute or two. Add 400g of crushed tomatoes. Add red lentils. Add one small jar of corn. Thrown in a hand-ful of chopped coriander. Squeeze half a lime and add the juice. Add a spoon of tomato puré. Let the whole thing simmer for a while. That's about it.

Serve with a lime-yoghurt sauce. Get some natural yoghurt, add grated lime peel. Serve cold and add a spoon or two on top of the chili when serving. Add a pinch of chopped coriander on top.

blog entry of the day: coolest stains

Jonas Cramby lists the coolest stains you can expect to get during an expedition into the wilderness.

the great river road

Just a few (of very many) pics from my recent road-trip along the Great River Road. It was an amazingly good trip. And I believe I learnt to master a decent southern accent as well.

The beginning:

There were some weird things along the way:

Excellent antiques shopping if you like American vintage things:

Plenty of southern charm. There's nothing quite like a good porch where you can sit and mind your own business:

A visit to Memphis:

Southern hot tamales:

Lots of charming old buildings:

Like walking into Merlotte's ('True Blood'):

Lots of Spanish Moss, contributing to that 'True Blood' feel:

More southern charm:

New Orleans - well worth a visit. Unfortunately, many mistakenly believe that that the damage from Katrina is more extensive than it is. Im most parts, you can't tell that it ever happened. Highly recommended. Great cocktail bars, restaurants and atmosphere.

Voodoo dolls:

Great cocktails:

Mint julep

assets/Uploads/GRR-2011-00991.JPG

The Mint Julep is common in the Southern United States and dates back to the 18th century. It's made from mint leaves, sugar, bourbon and water. Some add a bit of club soda. It's traditionally served in pewter or silver cups, held at the bottom or top, to allow frost to form on the outside of the cup.

Here's how to do it:

Put mint, sugar, and a small amount of bourbon into the bottom of a mixing glass. Gently muddle the mint and sugar, then let stand for a bit to allow the muddled leaves to release their flavor. Strain and pour into a julep cup (or similar vessel), rotating to coat the sides. Fill with ice, then add the rest of the bourbon whiskey. Garnish with a lightly-slapped small mint sprig.

There should have been some mint leaves on the top of the drink in the photo but I had already eaten them by the time I got the camera out...
